Your Unplanned Pregnancy: You Have Options

Pregnancy prompts many different emotions in many different people. For some, the joy and happiness can be the culmination of months or even years of trying to get pregnant, while for others, the first emotions can be an overwhelming fear of the future. One thing is for certain, regardless of the initial emotions surrounding your pregnancy, there are decisions you will need to make over the course of the next few months.

If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, then you’re likely wondering what the future holds for you, the father and your unborn child. One thing to keep in mind at this point is that you don’t have to make a decision today. Take time to clearly map out your options and discuss them with people in your support system. If you’re not sure what your options are, it might be a great idea to reach out to someone who has experience counseling women and men on their options during an unplanned pregnancy. Options counselors can offer advice and guidance on the more time sensitive issues as well as help you identify and address more long term plans for the future.

If you decide that parenting isn’t an option for you, options counselors can provide information on the many different types of adoption as well as your options regarding pregnancy termination, should that be something you want to explore further.

Unplanned pregnancy doesn’t mean unwanted or unloved, it simply means you aren’t prepared. Going forward, you can prepare yourself by objectively reviewing your options and making the most informed decision regarding your pregnancy and unborn child as possible.

Pregnancy Tip of the Month

If you are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and considering adoption for your unborn child, it's a good idea to talk to several professionals before you make your decision on who to work with. Not all professionals are created equal. Exploring the aspects of adoption that are important to you is one of the first steps you've got to take when choosing who to work with. Some professionals specialize in closed adoptions while others have more specialized services related to open adoption and post adoption contact. Read about, research and discuss your desires with someone you trust then find a professional who provides services that most closely match your ideal situation.
