National Adoption Day will fall on November 20th of this year. But the celebration of adoption lasts the entire month of November, every November. If you or your family would like to celebrate National Adoption Day or National Adoption Awareness Month, here is a calendar of ideas--one idea for every day of November!
But how did National Adoption Day really begin? It may be a surprising fact that National Adoption Day is relatively new. Eleven years ago that special day was created, by the National Adoption Day Coalition with the help of many law firms, child advocates, courts, and state foster care agencies--in order to educate and share the love and appreciation of adoption. This day is to show gratitude, appreciation, love, and support to all members of the adoption triad. Adoption would not be possible without each of the three very important sides of the triad.
In 2000, only a few adoption events were planned to celebrate the new National Adoption Day. With each passing year, word spread of the new celebration and appreciation day, and the number of events increased. Now events dot the nation as all members of the triad come together to share their stories, show their support, help those in need, and thank those who have helped them.
Just like last year, Nia Vardalos--known best for her role in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"--will be the official spokesperson for National Adoption Day for 2010. As an adoptive mother, Nia Vardalos has quite a story to tell. She and her husband had tried for years to conceive and adopt. Then one day, with 14 hours notice, their new 3-year-old daughter walked into their lives. They had no time to prepare, but they were happy to have her. Nia Vardalos has been and will continue to be a great spokesperson for National Adoption Day, 2010.
If your schedule allows it, participate in your local National Adoption Day. All across our nation, adoptions will be finalized by judges and the courts. Show your support by attending some of these proceedings. Show your support to those families who have made it through the long adoption process. If you're looking for a few more ways to show your support on November 20th, consider the below list.
Volunteer at an Adoption-Related Booth: It is common for adoption advocates to set up a booth or table near the finalization proceedings. Volunteer your time and share your experiences of adoption with those whom you come in contact.
Spread the Knowledge: Consider creating or volunteering to hand out informational packets on adoption. Educate your community with the basics of adoption--adoption costs, placement or adoption help, pregnancy options, and the length of the adoption process. Provide contact information to adoption professionals or professional counselors.
Offer Lodging: Many families may have to travel in order to finalize their adoption. If you can and you feel comfortable, offer them a place to sleep the night before the finalization. This can relieve quite a bit of stress for that family.
Give Thanks: Write thank-you notes to adoption judges, case workers, lawyers, and social workers. They work hard to finalize adoptions. A little appreciation can go a long way.
National Adoption Day is a great time to support your local adoption community-for all members of the adoption triad. It is a great time to educate those around you so they may make an informed decision when that time comes. It is a day to increase your appreciation and gratitude for all those who have made adoption possible.

If you’ve read any kind of news about adoption, chances are you’ve read the name Torry Hansen. She’s the woman who put her adopted Russian son on a plane back to Russia. I still remember the stories, back in 2005, about the Ohio couple who kept their adopted and foster children in cages. [more]
My best friend Penny remembers that I used to talk about adoption back in high school. She remembers me saying that I was going to have a girl first – part of choosing adoption meant that I could choose the gender of my children. [more]
