Every November is National Adoption Month. And 2012 is no different. Every year has its own theme, decided upon by the Child Welfare Information Gateway, and it's funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This year's theme is "National Adoption Month--Virtually: Adoption in the Digital Age." While efforts each November always focus around educating, informing, and recruiting the public for foster care and for permanent adoptive homes, this is the first year that the focus has been on a new, modern method of connecting with communities across the country.
As of right now, there is an estimated 104,000 children in foster care that are eligible for adoption. But there aren't enough homes or families available for permanent and loving placement. There is never enough. But the supporters and creators of National Adoption Month hope to change that with their efforts this year, or at least find as many foster children forever families as possible. And it all comes down to the power, accessibility, and outreach of modern social media sites, networks, and tactics. While National Adoption Month is geared toward the recruitment of potential adoptive parents, other groups are also a main focus, including adoption professionals, the youth looking for permanent placement with forever families, and all sides of the adoption triad.
One of the many beautiful things about adoption is that anyone and everyone can get involved. And this is especially true with this year's theme. Most everyone has access to a computer or the internet. This can be from your home, your phone, or even your local library. And chances are that if you have access to the internet, you may have one or a few social media accounts. All you have to do to support the adoption cause this month is log in and post a link or content about the importance of finding these children homes and you've done your part. You never know what type of impact your post or link could have on someone else.
National Adoption Month is for those touched by adoption and those who have not been, yet. It's about educating the public, informing them of how they can help children in need of a loving and stable family. If you want to see an adoption finalization in action, November 17th is the perfect day to do just that. November 17th is the official National Adoption Day for 2012. On this day, families and court officials come together to do a marathon of adoption finalizations, all throughout the country. You can see and be a part of families coming together in support, love, and excitement.
Remember, this month is all about educating others about adoption through social media. You only have to spend a few minutes to do something so simple that can have a lasting and life-changing effect. Celebrate with the adoption community this month and make this National Adoption Month the best yet!
