Question:
I am trying to find my niece and nephew who were adopted out in California when
they were toddlers. I am not sure how to go about this search. I am unable to hire
someone to do it for me.
Thank you.
June
Jan's Response: Dear June, Not sure how much information you will be able to get since you are the aunt, and
not the birth mother. Perhaps some of our readers who have looked for birth family
might have some suggestions. If you know the agency that handled the adoption, you could start with it. Also try
this link. There are many registeries available, too - not certain if they allow anyone other
than the birth parent or adoptee to register, but it is worth checking into. This
is the link for International Soundex Reunion Registry (Soundex) which is one of
the largest free International adoption
registries. You might also check out Reunite.com for ways
to locate birth family. Hope this helps! Jan | Linda's Response: Dear June,
Reunite.com is an excellent source as Jan has
pointed out. You can search the web for many different search helpers, but usually
there is a small fee for someone working personally on your case. Type in adoptees in search for listings of adoptees looking for family members.
There are many websites that offer more than just birth parents looking for birth
children and vise versa. It will most likely be harder for you as the aunt, but if they know they were
adopted, and they have some information, they may be looking as well. This is a
journey, and it takes time. I am in my tenth year of searching, and only last month
was I blessed with having my birth sister find me here at AdoptionWeek.com. If it is to be, you'll start walking in the direction you were meant to. Remember,
this is a journey for those whom were directly involved, and under circumstances
you were not, so if you are turned away at first, show persistence. I know... it
worked for me. Be blessed, Linda |
