An Obsession to Find Her - new article by Ben Draper
I had gone to to Battallion commander to see if I could get compassionate leave but was told that since I was not married, I did not qualify. Having very little money, I waited almost six months to get leave and went back to the city where she lived. Unfortunately, she had moved and I couldn't find her. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=178

To My Birth Mother, With Love - new article by Diane C.
On Sept. 14, 1940 a baby girl was left at the Salvation Army Home on S. Elm St. in Greensboro,N.C. It was a Saturday afternoon. A lady with a bundle in her arms and a small case in her hand carried both into the old Guilford Bank building {part of S.A.properity}, placed the baby on a landing with the case in front to keep the baby from moving. It had to be a woman as you never saw a man caring babies in those days. I think, a sister, cousin, grandmother, or aunt. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=179

Wisdom for Adoptive Families - new article by Beverly Bachel
Whether you have an adopted child – or know someone who does – there are many ways you can help adopted children (and all children, for that matter) feel loved and supported. Here are some suggestions from adopted children, adoptive parents and adoption agency workers. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=180

I Am So Glad You Are My Son - new article by Maryanne Dersch
In November we received a one page fax and photo about Sir Patrick. His birth mom abandoned him at two, and he spent a few months at Our Little Haven (a home for abused, neglected, drug exposed or HIV positive kids) and a year foster care. He was described as shy at first, but warmed up quickly. He had speech delays and hearing and vision problems. Sure, we said, we would love to be considered. We were primed and ready, full of confidence and hope that this would be a great kid and we would be great parents. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=181

I Still Love Them - new article by Tina Marie Rutherford
I had no idea what it really was; they wouldn't let me read the papers. They said if I didn't sign that day, I would miss out on the following week and that all the people were there to witness it. I was told they wouldn't be available next week if I took the time to read the papers like I wanted to. I felt like I had to sign, or I would not get my boys back. Anyway, I came back the next week to pick them up to go home for visitation. They threatened me and told me to get out of the building or they would call the police. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=182

5. DAVE THOMAS CENTER FOR ADOPTION LAW WEEKLY NEWS SUMMARY

December 3, 2002

"MISSOURI'S FOSTER CARE SYSTEM DYSFUNCTIONAL, REPORT CONCLUDES" - by Shashank Bengali
An investigative report recently issued to Gov. Bob Holden said Missouri's foster care system needs to make immediate changes. Among the recommendations were reducing workers' caseloads, creating a citizens' review panel, re-evaluating background check procedures for foster parents and improving worker training. The investigation was ordered by Holden after a Willard, Mo., man was charged with killing his two-year-old foster son.

"NUMBERS, TROUBLED CHILDREN, RACIAL DISPARITIES CAUSE FOSTER CARE WOES" - by Jim Siegel
Since 1990, the number of children in Ohio's foster care system has risen 60 percent, and experts find little reason to believe that trend won't continue into the future. Foster care officials are concerned about the violent behavior of some of the children who have been raised in foster care as well as the high percentage of black youths in the system. In an effort to improve the system, the state has been encouraging the recruitment of families who will act as foster parents and also adopt a child.

12. JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT

THE BACK SEAT OF THE CAR

At a recent adoption event, an adoption attorney told a story of an adoption that was scheduled for a Friday, the day before Christmas eve. The finalization was scheduled at 1:00, and the attorney called in advance to be sure the judge would be there.

Despite assurances that the court would be open, when the couple flew in from out of state and showed up with the attorney at the court, all of the judges had left, and the clerk was closing the court building. So, the attorney convinced the clerk to give him the file, and the attorney reached a judge by phone who agreed to finalize the adoption at his house.

While on the way to the car, the attorney spotted another judge on his way out of a department store with bags of Christmas presents. After hearing the predicament, this judge agreed to finalize the adoption there in the parking lot.

So, he had the couple and the baby get in the back seat, and the attorney and the judge sat in the front seats. The adoption was finalized, and a few days later when the judge returned the file to the court, the judge said, "Many children have been conceived in the back seat of a car, but I'll bet that was the first time a child has ever been ADOPTED in the back seat."

15. SPEAK OUT

My family had the most wonderful Thanksgiving ever this year. We invited our oldest adopted child's birth mother to dinner! "Our" daughter is 17. We have had her since age 5. The very day we were walking out the door to go to court to finalize the adoption, the phone rang, and it was the birth mom. Our hearts sank. We were not sure we could handle it. Over the years, we have had very little contact with her. "Our" daughter has had to work through some very powerful anger. Some of it toward us, some toward the birth mom.

This year it felt right and we went for it. I cannot tell you what a wonderful experience it was for us all. Most of all, it brought "our" daughter full circle, allowed her to finish her healing and finally be able to establish just who she really is. We do not mind sharing, because we have a wonderful daughter who has been able to let all of us adults know that she not only has the right to love two moms, but the ability to put it all into focus. She truly is "our" daughter: birth mom's and ours! - Kay

---------------------------------

Thanks to someone at AdoptionRegistry.com, a match was made. Sister looking for brother born May 1 1945, Media, PA. Whoever helped make the match, THANK YOU. We reunited by phone on Sept. 27, 2002 and visited Nov. 17, 2002. - W.M.(C.)S.

---------------------------------

I am in contact with my birth family, through the intervention of a maternal cousin via the internet. After confirming non-identifying information given me from the adoption agency in NJ, we are certain that we are family. When she passed this information on to my birth mother, who is married to my birth father, it really had a bad result. While she had always maintained her strong interest in finding me, the shock was apparently too much. I received one letter giving me some information and then politely asking me to get on with my life. This was hurtful for me and my cousin, who no longer communicates with me at the express wishes of her aunt, which I understand.

By the way, I am only privy to first names. They have all my information, shared freely by me, and I may never know more than the general area they live in and 2 first names. Sadly, they never were able to have any other children, and they married 10 years after I was adopted. I am a strong, career woman, age 44, so I will go on. How very sad for them, however. I am also not certain if she shared this information with my father. - Melanie

---------------------------------

Hi, my name is Megan. I was adopted at birth. I have a terminal disease, and I would like to find my mother. I live in Missouri, where the records became available recently, and have petitioned the state but not received any info as of yet. I've looked on every free registry I can find, but there are no matches. I'm a musician, and money is really tight. Where do I go when I've exhausted the free resources?

---------------------------------

I am 23 yrs old, and I was born on December 21, 1978. I was born in Saint Pete, FL. I am looking for my birth mother and father. The one thing that I do know about them is that my birth mother has brown hair and green eyes, and that she is French, English, and Greek. My birth father is American and Italian. My social worker's name is Charlotte Bytner from Catholic Social Services at St Pete, FL. The doctor that deliverd me was Dr. Norstein. From what hospital, I am not sure. My hope is that someone will see this and maybe know more. Thank You. - T.T.

---------------------------------

My name is Michelle, and I am 24 years old. I wasn't placed for adoption, but a year ago, I placed my daughter for adoption. I kept her for 6 weeks and realized she needed better than what I could give her. She is doing very well now, but I really miss her. I hope one day she can forgive me for what I did. I couldn't do it on my own.

---------------------------------

I subscribed to this adoption site for my best friend, Sharon, who is adopted. She has tried to find her birth mother, with some help from her adoptive mother, but with no luck. I have two questions for anyone who would like to answer. First, how does an adoptee handle the potential anger, jealousy, feelings of abandonment from the adoptive parents? I am not adopted, but I would think the people who adopted the baby/child would feel very hurt if their child wanted to find their birth parents. My friend has not had this problem, because she says that while she would like to know her birth mother and any possible other relatives, not finding these people will not change how she has turned out. (We are both 52 years old.) Actually, I am the one who has bugged her for the past 40 years to try and find her birth mother.

My second question is, how does a best friend deal with the search and possible ramifications? I would be very happy for her, and I don't see her adoptive mother causing any problems, but if it did not work out nicely, how would I help Sharon? Thanks for any help. - Anne

---------------------------------

Greetings:

In response to comments of reasons why people adopting international over domestic is simply....in all probability, you will be matched with a child! We are a family of four from the state of Ohio who has tried to adopt TWICE, to no avail. Our HS was sent to over 100 agencies concerning available children. Not ONE social worker/agency responded to our HS during the span of our homestudy, even though we were open to a number of issues. (If you) go international, you will bring home a child! - Diane Eddy/Ohio

16. ADOPTION ONLINE SUPPORT GROUP REVIEW

Here's a recent post from the Adoption Situations group:

Tomorrow is December the 2nd, the most important day in our lives. You see, eight years ago, that was the date my husband and I went to Delaware and first met our daughter.

Lyssa Rae, was six weeks old and the most beautiful baby I had honestly ever seen. (Hey, I had been a hospital nursery nurse so this is my professional opinion.) It was love at first sight. Our four hour drive home was suprisingly short. We were in awe of her smile, cry, demeanor, her eyes, mouth, fingers, & toes. Her whole being blessed our souls from that day onward.

We took our annual family photo this past Wednesday, the 27th of November. Times have changed. She is now a young lady of eight, but our awe remains.

Hopefully, by this time next year, there will be another unique child in all of our lives.

17. ADOPTION POETRY

NOT UNDER, BUT IN MY HEART
(Dedicated to my children)

I've followed God's plan
pondering now, I decide
preparing me for your arrival
His greatness formed to survive

Those months and years before
I felt you grow inside of me
though you'd never my flesh
In my dreams, it's you I'd see

As you grew within my heart
gracing my soul a love
I'd not learned before
coming graciously from above

I still can swallow hardly
recalling first holding you
a tiny eager hand in mine
in my heart develop through

Amorous for every quirk
this new love that we'd feel
as our journey of adoption
would make this feeling real

I will never truly capture
my perfect emotions in words
your lives with me are treasured
as being Momma to thirds

Though another parent bore you
I'd like to think I too
for you grew inside of me
before it was you I knew

The tears of joy each momenta stranger won't get the wit
or understand how a child
grows in your heart, not under it

- Heather LM Cieslik
