Defining Moments - new article by Karen DeLuca
The feeling of being rootless, of having no solid ground, of being without an anchor was something that I had become uneasy with. I had no core sense of self and was realizing that something was absolutely ripped out of me that could not be replaced. When I began my search I realized there was something completely missing for the rest of my life and it affects, to some degree, every decision I have made. To All My Parents - new article by Jill Carter
I have spent my life considering the extraordinary pain one goes through in giving up a child. Add to that, that until very recently (and still often today), the entire 'episode' in ones life is "forgotten", or ignored as if never happened by close family and friends. For most, there is little or no formal, professionally assisted, grieving or coping, and yet the loss is incomparable. Young women, older women, and their partners involved (hopefully) tend to be treated with the attitude of "just forget it and go on". These things only cause those who've given up a child to mourn alone, grieve to no end, and shelve away a pain so deep and so strong - no adequate words can describe it. That pain affects every part of their being and every aspect of their lives from that day forward - just ask them. Read more at http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=12
Cheerleading for Heritage Camps - new article by Pam Sweetser
I couldn't have said it better myself. My husband and I are so grateful to have our precious children, but also to have the opportunity to embrace two countries and cultures that we would probably know very little about otherwise. Except for the very obvious color of my skin or shape of my eyes, I honestly feel Indian and Korean sometimes. What an invaluable education for anyone to experience, and a true gift for adoptive families. I cannot imagine passing up an opportunity to be part of another culture, especially that of my child. Finding an Attachment Therapist - new article by Susan M. Ward
As older child adoptive parents, we all have to deal with varying levels of attachment and bonding issues. Our children may slide smoothly into their new lives and just need some extra reassurances and affection to help them feel secure that we're their forever parents. They may arrive with some fears and anxieties about attaching to us, their new parents, and need us to implement extra attachment and bonding activities at home. 8. FEATURED WAITING CHILD
Shabazz is a child with a creative imagination. He has large brown eyes, which express his uniqueness. He has a large smile that expresses his excitement for new toys, playing and acting as the helper in the home. Shabazz is very aware of what goes on around him and pays close attention to what others are doing. He likes video games and playing sports. When Shabazz is not in a playful mood, he plays by himself and likes to be left alone. Shabazz is not as sociable as the average eight-year-old boy. He is very independent and likes to do things on his own. He can become frustrated with himself when he is unsuccessful at something. He is behind in school, but has shown a lot of progress over the past year displaying his commitment to make self-improvements.

10. SEARCH AND REUNION TIP
You might encounter people who will question your right to 'disrupt' your birthparents lives, or your right to 'betray' your adoptive parents by searching. Usually these people have little understanding of adoption or searchers, but these questions might be something that you yourself have struggled with, and it pays to have answers, if for no other reason than to feel comfortable with whatever decision you make.
This search & reunion tip has been brought to you by: www.GuaranteedAdoptionSearch.com - We'll find the person you're looking for, or your search is free!

12. ADOPTION POLL
RESULTS OF OUR LAST POLL
The children up for adoption through DCF are all special-needs children - either a member of a minority ethnicity, part of a sibling group that can't be broken up, age 8 or older or have physical or emotional problems.
And because they probably have gone through the trauma of abuse, neglect or other kind of separation, they have a higher risk of having emotional problems than the population in general.
Question: Should adoptive parents have to "put up" with the misbehavior of special needs children after adoption?
70% - Yes, if you are willing to adopt, you should be prepared for ANYTHING and ready to accept the child any way.
25.1% - Yes, they should: love endures all things.
2.4% - No, if the child was no problem prior to adoption, it should not be the duty of the new parents to teach the child proper manners.
2.4% - No, adoptive parents are doing them a favor by adopting them, so they should not have to put up with any misbehavior.
VOTE IN OUR CURRENT POLL
The boy had been living with the Emerys for more than a year when DCFS decided to place him with an aunt who said she had been overlooked when ABJ Community Services, the social services agency, placed her nephew with the Emerys.
After months of intense evaluation in which the lives of both parties were placed under a microscope, the custody fight ended last August when a judge decided the boy should remain with the Emerys.
It's been 3 1/2 years since the boy was placed with the Emerys and he has thrived. Here's one case that needs to be expedited. Here's one little boy whose name needs to be deleted from the foster-care rolls so that he and his family can get on with their lives.
Read the article: http://www.adoption.com/includes/frame.php?url=http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/chi-0203040147mar04.column?coll=chi%2Dnews%2Dcol
Question: Do you think foster care children who are later adopted should still have their names kept on the foster-care rolls?
No, once adopted, they're no longer under foster care, so their names should be deleted shortly after the adoption.
No, these children now have parents, so this is very unnecessary.
Yes, this protects the child.
Yes, adopted foster care children need to have their names remain on the roll until they are at least 18 years old.

15. ADOPTION BITS & BYTES
Attachment and Bonding - by Pat Johnston
As a long-time adoption educator, I'm often seen as a resource by those looking for hard-to-find information. Adoption Bits & Bytes is a column designed to put you in touch with some of those resources. Each issue will focus on one topic. This issue provides links to information on the topic of Attachment and Bonding issues (not an exhaustive list--just some tidbits I thought you might NOT have found).
The umbrella organization on this issue is ATTACh (http://www.attach.org), which describes itself like this...
"ATTACh, The Association for Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children, is an international coalition of professional and lay persons who are involved with children who have attachment difficulties. Committed to integrating our knowledge, talents, and resources to promote the identification of attachment issues, we also share a variety of effective interventions and treatments. Our energies are focused primarily on:
Creating public education and awareness
Providing clinical education, training, and research
Offering family support
Promoting standards for ethical practice
Generating public policy discussions
Developing diagnostic classifications
To implement our goals and objectives-and to afford cutting-edge information to all who are interested-we sponsor an annual conference on attachment and bonding. Featuring a host of multi-disciplinary experts who reflect a wide range of approaches, the conference is a valuable resource to both professionals and parents."
Colorado attachment specialist Deborah Hage offers a page within her site that links to a number of useful articles and book excerpts on attachment and bonding issues http://www.deborahhage.com
Nancy Ashe's Adoption at About.com has all kinds of goodies to love, and those on attachment specifically can be found at http://adoption.about.com/msubadch_attach.htm?once=true&
Adoptive parent and advocate Teri Doolittle's Practical Attachment page is at http://home.att.net/~PracticalAttachment/index.html
The Attachment Disorder Network, founded by my old friend (formerly from Indianapolis) Nancy Spoolstra has a great in-print newsletter in addition to their website at http://www.radzebra.org
Marcy Axness' article on Infant Adoption on The Birth Scene http://www.birthpsychology.com/birthscene/adoption.html
There's a great article on the Attachment Disorder Support Group's website called "Top 10 Don'ts for Parents of Unattached Children" http://www.syix.com/adsg/donts.htm
A site called It's Time to Understand is at http://members.tripod.com/radclass/slide01.html
Now of course I don't want you to miss the attachment-related articles on Perspectives Press, Inc.'s own site! After all, attachment is at the heart of
Vera Fahlberg's A Child's Journey through Placement. on Perspectives Press' articles index you'll find an excerpt called "The Child Who Is Stuck" at http://www.perspectivespress.com/vfstuckchild.html
Mary Hopkins-Best's Toddler Adoption: The Weaver's Craft. You'll find the excerpt "When Adopted Toddlers Reject Their Parents" at http://www.perspectivespress.com/todreject.html
my own Launching a Baby's Adoption. you'll want to read "Promoting Attachment through the Senses"
And now we have a brand new (spring 2002) book clearly devoted to the subject: Deborah Gray's 2002 Attaching in Adoption: Practical Tools for Today's Parents. Read the excerpt "Relaxing the Grip of Anxiety and Control" at http://www.perspectivespress.com/toolbox.html
The next issue of Bits and Bytes will focus on Legal Issues in Adoption. Know of any sites you feel we should be sure to include? Let me know at info@perspectivespress.com

16. FEATURED ADOPTION PROFESSIONAL
HEART TO HEART ADOPTION
Heart to Heart Adoption Service is a nonprofit agency authorized by the New York State Office of Family and Children's Services to provide both domestic and international adoptions. Because of our own difficult experiences in adopting a daughter from Guatemala, we decided to specialize in Guatemalan adoptions. We have established a network of highly respected and experienced lawyers based in Guatemala City. For the most part, the infants, toddlers and children who are available for adoption, come from very impoverished circumstances and have been kept in approved foster homes while awaiting a loving family.
The name Heart to Heart was chosen for a dual purpose. First, it describes what the agency does - unites two or more hearts together in a family bond and second, it describes how that service is rendered - in a very heartfelt, sensitive, caring supportive manner designed to make the experience as stress free as possible. We have devoted our professional careers to serving children and young people. Inspired by the experiences of adoption, by our thankfulness to God for this great gift of life he has given us and by the dire need of the children of Guatemala, we have chosen to devote the rest of our lives to uniting families. - Linda and David Wynn

20. ADOPTION POETRY
Today I Kissed an Angel
Today I kissed an angel.
I knew it from the start.
The first time my angel smiled at me;
I gave away my heart.
Today I kissed an angel;
This angel child of mine
Though not of my creation,
My child by God's design.
Today I kissed an angel.
My heart is dancing wild;
Our family, by a miracle;
Blessed by our angel child.
