2.  NEW ARTICLES

Time for You - new article by Susan M. Ward
When do we get a break? When do we get time for us? How do we find time? Parents balance multiple challenges within day-to-day living. Finding parental times to get re-charged and renewed are often few and far between. For next month, try to fit a mini break into each day, and try to plan one BIG break during the next couple of months. All of these need to be modified, or utilized according to the age of your child(ren). Read more.

Older Child Adoption Lingo - new article by Susan M. Ward
"I've always been intrigued by lingo, insider vocabulary. For example, in the restaurant world, they have words like "in the weeds", meaning a waitperson or the kitchen that is overwhelmed and not on top of things, or "diver", meaning the dishwasher. Every field has it's own lingo, including the older child adoption world. Read more.

Birth Parent Loss and Grief - new article by Patricia E. Roles
In the past, the emphasis in the adoption process has largely been on the reception of the child into the adoptive family, rather than the reciprocal loss of the baby for the birth parents and extended family. The bonding process for the birth mother, who carried the baby inside her during pregnancy and experienced the miracle of birth with this baby, had not been previously acknowledged in society at large or by the professionals working in adoption and mental health. Adoption relinquishment involves a grief process not unlike other types of grief such as death or separation. Read more.

ADOPTING AFTER INFERTILITY
Patricia Irwin Johnson's, Adopting After Infertility, is the book in focus this week. As one whose family dealt with two generations of infertility and has increased it onto three generations through adoption, her words are sincere and helpful. This book touches on the challenges of infertility, making a commitment to adopt, and special issues that may arise along the way.

If you or anyone you know is infertile and not quite sure how to go about adopting, don't let your circumstance discourage you. This book will lead you step-by-step, clueing you in on what to expect and how to come out successful.

8.  FEATURED WAITING CHILD

Tammy loves participating in basketball, soccer, cheerleading and enjoys computer games. She is a very outgoing child who has lots of friends. Tammy makes average to above average grades in school. She takes medication for nocturnal enuresis. She is healthy and has no physical limitations. A one or two parent family with no more than two other children would be and ideal adoptive placement for Tammy. She would do well in a family with the love and patience to allow her to bond at her own pace.

photolisting.adoption.com is a free community service of Adoption.com featuring more than 1,000 children awaiting loving, permanent homes.

9.  REUNITED WITH BIRTHFAMILY

Congratulations to everyone who has been reunite with their birthfamily this week! Please share your story with us at www.AdoptionWeek.com.

I just wanted you all to know that I found my birthmother on this website. I sat down one afternoon, it was my first time looking, and I found her! Everything matches up and I wanted you to know how very grateful I am. Thanks! - Amy

I just wanted to say thank you so very much. The phone number you gave was wonderful. It put me in touch with my half brother that I have been searching for. Thank you and again, and god bless this site. Now my life can be totally whole. Best of luck to all those that are searching (it pays to be persistent; it really pays off). Now, hopefully I will get to me him and his family soon. Thank you so much. - Michelle

I am an adoptee myself and recently had the most wonderful reunion with both my birth parents, who I located through adoption.com and the reunion registry. Thank you. - Clare

Although it's been a year, I wanted to let you folks at Adoption.com that this indeed was a successful match. The person who 'found' me in your database was/is my birthmother who gave me up for adoption 35 years ago. In the past year, we've forged a nice relationship that continues to grow. I've met her, my grandmother, uncle, and numerous cousins, all of who are lovely people. I thank you very much for your services! We couldn't have done it without you. - Kathi

10.  SEARCH AND REUNION TIP

Prior to meeting your birthparent or birthchild, take time to really search your heart as to how you feel. Rethink their response to you to see if you are hesitant in any way. If you are or if your feelings are too strong for you to sort out alone, then talk with your counselor about it.

11.  ADOPTION GEM

GOD CHOOSES MOM FOR DISABLED CHILD
Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures, and a couple by habit. This year, nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen?

Somehow I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to make notes in a giant ledger.

"Armstrong, Beth; son; patron saint, Matthew. "Forrest, Marjorie; daughter; patron saint, Cecelia. "Rudledge, Carrie; twins; patron saint.... give her Gerard. He's used to profanity."

Finally, he passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a handicapped child." The angel is curious. "Why this one, God? She's so happy." "Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a handicapped child a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel." "But has she patience?" asks the angel. "I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it."

"I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence. She'll have to teach the child to live in her world and that's not going to be easy." "But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you." God smiles. "No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness." The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?" God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, there is a woman I will bless with a child less then perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a `spoken word.' She will never consider a `step' ordinary. When her child says `Momma' for the first time, she will be present at a miracle and know it! When she describes a tree or a sunset to her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see my creations." "I will permit her to see clearly the things I see---ignorance, cruelty, prejudice--- and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side." "And what about her patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in midair. God smiles. "A mirror will suffice."

12.  ADOPTION POLL

RESULTS OF OUR LAST POLL

Question: Do you think the government should classify a fetus as an "unborn child?"

54.8% - A child is alive before it is born.
16.6% - We should do everything we can to make prenatal care available for all pregnant women.
14.7% - The government should not have a say in this decision, which should be made by the individual.
9.6% - This proposal is part of an administration attempt to undermine the legal status of abortion.
2.8% - This particular approach of defining a fetus as a person is unnecessary.
1.3% - This makes it easier for low-income women to receive prenatal care under government health programs.

VOTE IN OUR CURRENT POLL
Besides visits with his biological mom and dad, 4-year-old Justin knows nothing about their struggle with the Asentes, who are raising him and want to adopt him.

The biological parents signed consent-to-adopt forms before letting the 11-month-old Justin go to live with the Asentes. A month later, they let it be known that they wanted the child back. The Asentes refused court orders to return him.

Ms. Moore and Mr. Dorning, his biological parents, who are not married and faced financial struggles, understood the significance of signing and that Justin should remain with the Asentes. The college-educated couple already had adopted Joey, Justin's full biological brother.

Question: Do you think the Asentes should be allowed to adopt Justin?

No, Justin should be returned to Ms. Moore and Mr. Dorning, his biological parents.
No, Justin should be allowed to be raised by the Asentes, but they should not be allowed to adopt him until his biological parents fully give their consent.
Yes, Justin should be adopted by the Asentes, because they are better parents.

14.  JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT

TOMMY'S MOMMY
For weeks a six-year old lad kept telling his first-grade teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house.

One day the mother allowed the boy to feel the movements of the unborn child. The six-year old was obviously impressed, but made no comment. Furthermore, he stopped telling his teacher about the impending event.

The teacher finally sat the boy on her lap and said, "Tommy, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?"

Tommy burst into tears and confessed, "I think Mommy ate it!"
