Lost and Found - new article by Annapurna Alisa Sydell
Until the night I found my sister Doe and actually spoke with her, I never, not once, said the word sister to my mother. Ah, the unbearable lightness of being my mothers daughter. My mother gave birth to three daughters and came to forfeit each of us; she squandered her daughters like a drunk squanders his paycheck. I, the eldest, was the last to be forsaken and the first to be restored. I was her sole witness. Now, I am her accuser, I am her prosecution and her defense. I am her evidence. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=169
My Petition - new article by Ray Buffer
A petition has been developed to bring awareness to legislators and the public by insisting that adoptees in all 50 states over the age of 18 possess, if they so choose, their original birth certificates. Slavery was abolished with a constitutional amendment, and it was through an amendment that women were empowered to vote. Please sign this petition that demands an "Adoptees' Amendment", and help restore an invisible minority to equal status. "All men were created equal..." yet under the current political climate, adoptees are not. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=163
Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy: An Effective Treatment for Children with Trauma-Attachment Disorders - new article by Arthur Becker-Weidman, Ph.D.
Approximately 2% of the population is adopted, and between 50% and 80% of such children have attachment disorder symptoms. Many of these children are violent and aggressive and as adults are at risk of developing a variety of psychological problems and personality disorders, including antisocial personality disorder , narcissistic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and psychopathic personality disorder. Neglected children are at risk of social withdrawal, social rejection, and pervasive feelings of incompetence. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=170
Anya's Bridge of Hope Story - new article by Anya Fainberg
When I first saw my parents, the empty place in my heart was gone. Then I went to my new house. My mom gave me a bath to relax me. I stayed in the tub for over an hour; I had never had a bath before. After five weeks of fun, I had to go back to Russia. I was extremely sad and I was afraid my parent's wouldn't come to get me. I wasn't really sure what to think. I was crying a lot in Russia. I was waiting a long time for my mom and dad. Finally, one day, my mom and dad came. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=171
The Love That Made My Life Complete - new article by Beth
In September 2002, I got my papers. I was thrilled but scared to death opening that envelope. Then it happend: I flipped through looking for a name, any name that would link me to someone out there. I found the name, and it was so common that I thought I would never find her. I looked and looked on the internet, and then one day, it hit me: do a search on classmates.com. I did, and it pulled up her maiden name and her married name. I called without hesitation. The phone rang and rang, and no one answered. I called back every fifteen minutes, and finally someone answered. When I heard the voice on the other end, I knew it was her. I told her I was looking on classmates.com and found her name. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=172

12. JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT
THE BIBLE
A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated
as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something
fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked
at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed
in between the pages.
"Mama, look what I found," the boy
called out.
"What have you got there, dear?"
With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered,
"I think it's Adam's underwear!"

15. SPEAK OUT
Sharon from Ohio: I'm so glad that you found your son, too bad he does
not share your joy. Do not lose hope that he may
someday want to be part of your life. Keep
track of him so you don't lose him and his family.
I was adopted from birth 56 years ago. I knew I was
adopted but did not know too much until both of my
parents had died. I have some info and have been
searching for 4-5 years now, and I'm still searching and
hoping.
Some day your son may want to be part of your family.
Keep the faith, and the joy you felt (when) you found
him. - Bruce
---------------------------------
My husband was abandoned a few hours after his birth and found in an alley in
Chicago. I want to help him look for his birth family; he really wants to
start, but we don't know where to begin. The Catholic Charities who he was
adopted through said they do not have anything in his file other than that he
was found in an alley. Can someone give me a start or suggestions on what to
begin doing? Thank you so much. - Laura (weloveamc@aol.com)
---------------------------------
Hi, my name is Erin, and I am 23 years old. I was adopted as a newborn and was even
given a name. By the age of 4, my parents told me about my adoption, and I think ever
since I knew, I wanted to find my b-family! When I was 17, I contacted my social
worker with a letter to my bmom and asked her to forward it on, and she did. For
the next year, that is how I kept in touch, since I wasn't of age yet.
As soon as I was 18, we got each other's addresses and started contacting each other. I found out so
much information through the letters. Once I graduated (from) high school, my whole family
and I flew to San Francisco to meet my bmom. I was so nervous the whole flight and
so was my Mom. We finally reached San Francisco, and I spent the next couple of days with
her. By the third day, we ran into my parents on the pier and I told my parents I
didn't want to be with my bmom anymore. So my dad intervened and said that we
would be going home.
I wasn't pleased with her. She just laid everything on me so
thick that I just wasn't impressed and haven't had a conversation with her since
then. I was wondering if there was anyone out there that has (had) a bad reunion and
would like to talk and help each other. I am still troubled by everything. Thank you, Erin (erbear_938@yahoo.com)
---------------------------------
Regina,
I have heard the term conifidential intermediary
before, but found no one who can tell me where I can
find one. I know they are in the court system, but
what branch or office?
I was adopted in Los Angeles, California 56 years ago
and have been looking for 4-5 years for my birth
mother. Thank you, Bruce (searchingformypast@yahoo.com)
---------------------------------
Hi. My husband and I are in a situation that involves family. We presently have custody of my nephew's children, one is his step-child. He and the mother are now living in a different state and do not exercise their visitation rights on a regular basis. The oldest child has a symptom called Reactive Attachment Disorder. His therapist says he needs closure to know that this is final and that no one is going to move him to another home again. He has been in and out of foster care.
We spoke to an attorney, and he said we cannot adopt until the parents' rights are terminated, and the state would have to do that. Also, if we adopt them, we will lose what little financial help we receive to take care of them. We both work, but it will be extremely difficult to support all 7 of us on our income. We still have 2 children at home. I have heard there is such a thing as special needs adoption where you adopt siblings. Can anyone out there help? Thank you, G.W.
---------------------------------
After 52 yrs. of looking for our baby sister, thanks to your site,
she called us, and what a happy reunion it was! Thanks again, Alexina
---------------------------------
My husband and I are both white, and 3 years ago, we adopted our daughter who is
biracial. She is a happy, beautiful child. Six months ago, we were caught by
surprise when we were given an opportunity to adopt again. Our son is multiracial
(Italian, Black, and Puerto Rican) and now 6 months old. Both children were adopted
independently: we placed ads and retained an attorney. We did not wait long for
our children ( 2 weeks for out daughter, 1 month for our son). Sadly, most couples
aren't interested in adopting biracial children. Couples would rather spend
thousands on advertising expenses and months of waiting to get a Caucasian baby
than to take a biracial infant. This is sickening to me.
Couples travel half way around the world to get an Asian child but won't consider an American child of a
different race. My children are adorable and wonderful, and they have made us so
happy. I just wanted to share this with everyone; maybe it will get someone out
there to consider adopting a biracial child. There is definitely a need for these
special people. Write to me at Tweetyp824@yahoo.com. - Lori, Long Island, NY
---------------------------------
I was adopted & found my parents 7 yrs ago because of a medical problem. Without
this knowledge, I would not be alive today. We now have a great relationship. I
have tried on many occasions to find my daughter that I had to give up at birth, if only to give her the medical history. (I
was only 15). I have listed on several different registries. She was born July 6, 1963 in Toledo, Ohio. Maybe she
receives Adoption Week e-Magazine and (will) see this. I would like nothing more than to hear from her. I have never let a day go by since her birth that I didn't pray for her and love her. - Suzanne B.

16. ADOPTION ONLINE SUPPORT GROUP REVIEW
Here's a recent post from the Search-Reunion group:
Hi, Anna.
I just had to say that I am a reunited bmom and it
took me 28 years and 8 months to find my bdaughter.
From my point of view only, you are pushing too hard
on your birth mom. If my daughter had come that
overwhelming on me, I would have fled the other way.
I didn't want to give up my baby, but I did, and
finding her made me insecure and downright scared.
Keep this thought: your bmom said she had things to
talk over with you in person. Please give her some
breathing room to explain what's in her heart, instead
of rushing her and thinking things that probably aren't
there.
Unfortunately, some birth moms stayed in denial
and distanced themselves from that unbelievable hurt
of giving up our babies. I did, and the last 3 years
have been up and down with my beautiful daughter and
myself.
Please be a bit more patient with Sue. She and only
she should be the one to answer your questions,
regardless on slow she is in doing so. Please give
her some security in that you will be patient with her,
and wait for the answers to the questions you have.
Sit back and just enjoy the relatives you now have
and wait on your bmom to feel secure and strengthened
enough to answer some hard, heart-breaking questions
that you have.
God bless you,
Norma

17. ADOPTION POETRY
YOU ARE MY DESTINY
You came into our lives, what a wonderful thing.
You give us so much joy and happiness, and we've done nothing but gain.
Though you grew not in my womb, and I did not feel you kick, you did grow.
In my heart, and we are so blessed to have been picked.
Your first mother loves you dearly and she gave the gift of life, then she
intrusted me with you is what she felt she had to do.
Everyday I do thank God for women such as she, for it was her love and
unselfishness that made a momma out of me.
This is something I have wanted for such a long long time, just to hold a
baby in my arms and know that she is mine.
Though you have not flesh of my flesh, nor did you get bone of my bone,
when I rock you in my arms to sleep, you surely wouldn't know.
So each time I get your sweet caress and you kiss me on the cheek, my love
grows stronger than the day before; I know I'm lucky to be me.
YOU ARE MY DAUGHTER. YOU ARE MY CHILD. YOU ARE MY DESTINY.
