In the Name of the Father - new article by Johanna Nesler
“Actually, most birth mothers block out the birth date of the child they gave up for adoption. It’s too painful for them to remember something like that. They even forget the name of this agency,” the social worker explained. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=203
The Search of My Biological Father - new article by Matt Geuther
I have thought about this a lot, and I know a great deal of time has passed. My mother died at 49, fairly young, and it was her second bout with cancer. For all I know my biological father is deceased as well. If I wait much longer, it is almost a certainty that he will have died before a reunion can take place. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=204
Azurite Butterfly - new article by Beverly A Dixon
I am proudly writing with great enthusiasm about the Spring 2001 music group that I have formed and still manage which consists of four of my five girls whom are all adopted! The group features biological sisters Tamika (14 y.o.), Nichelle (13 y.o.) and biological sisters, Sierra (12 y.o.) and Raina (9 y.o.). http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=205
Journey to the Valley - new article by Courtney Frey
As each shadow reached the girl I watched as they placed the shadows of their babies into the soul of the girl. As each infant reached into her heart I watched what had happened to me … as it happened to her. She remembered. She felt again. As she dropped to her knees a gut-wrenching sob came out from her throat and she screamed. Several of the shadows wrapped themselves around her, beginning to cry themselves. Then, as all of them worked together she began to fall. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=206
The Adoption Manual - new article by Leeanne Berry
I’ll never forget the first time that my son actually understood that he was adopted. Even though we had been telling him about his adoption all of his life, he did not understand what it meant until his cousin gave birth to twins and he assumed that he came from my tummy just as the twins came from their mother’s tummy. We were not at home when this conversation came about and he cried in the car and said that he needed his “real” mommy. For months afterward, he would make up stories about his “other mommy far, far away.” According to him she was going to come get him and bring him gifts. He would tell others that he had another “mother.” http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=207

4. THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR ADOPTION LAW & POLICY WEEKLY NEWS SUMMMARY
January 14, 2003
"FOSTER CARE MAKES STRIDES; STATE'S REFORMS SEEM TO HAVE EASED SOME STRAIN" - by Mike Chalmers
State and private-agency officials have noted that Delaware's foster-care
system is under less strain than it was two years ago, when foster parents
were quitting in frustration and government and community leaders launched a
reform effort to turn the state into a national model. However, they
acknowledge that the system is still far from perfect. In an effort to make
the system more successful, the state is starting an advertising campaign to
recruit more foster families and encourage more businesses, churches and
civic groups to provide activities and donations.

"UTAH 'LONG-ARM' STATUTE UPHELD IN BOY'S ADOPTION CASE" - by Elizabeth Neff
In a case involving the adoption of a 13-year-old boy whose parents were
convicted of child sex abuse crimes, the Utah Supreme Court unanimously
ruled that Utah courts have jurisdiction to terminate the parental rights of
nonresidents. The justices held that state law gives Utah courts
jurisdiction if the child in question lives in Utah and the parents are
given adequate notice of the proceedings. The justices also noted that
granting jurisdiction in such cases does not violate the due process rights
of parents.

"COURT DELETES SENTENCES THAT COULD INADVERTENTLY PROHIBIT ADOPTION OPTION" - by Liz Sidoti
The Ohio Supreme Court recently amended an opinion after a lesbian couple
seeking equal custody of their children argued that the ruling in their case
inadvertently prohibited "second-parent adoption" in Ohio. The court,
without comment, agreed to delete three sentences, one of which included the
phrase: "second-parent adoption is not available in Ohio." While courts in
other states have said second-parent adoption is available, Ohio's high
court has never ruled whether it is an option in Ohio.

"ADOPTION PROGRAMS NEED FUNDS, GROUP SAYS" - by Nathan Leaf
While Ohio has managed to place more neglected and abused children in
permanent homes over the last five years, the number of children awaiting
adoption has continued to grow. According to a study conducted by the
Public Children Services Association of Ohio, much of the problem can be
attributed to a lack of state funding. The report recommends maintaining
the current level of state funding for core child welfare services.

6. NEW ADOPTIVE FAMILY
Congratulations to Ann and Larry, one of the new adoptive families!
Here's what they had to say about their adoption:
Thank you so much for your help with this site. I really have appreciated
your prompt responses to our inquiries. We have been incredibly lucky in
our adoption process. Our baby's birth mom and birth dad found us on
Adoption.com one week after our profile went online. Approximately 10 weeks
later, we welcomed a happy and healthy baby boy into our family. Since
we have a very open adoption, we now have more wonderful family in our lives
(our son's birth family) as well.
- Ann & Larry G.

8. FEATURED WAITING CHILD

James is a very handsome six-year-old. He has two other siblings and has a strong bond with them. He needs help to channel his aggression into more positive directions. James is more concrete than is normal for his age and lacks problem-solving skills. He is unable to manage mildly difficult or challenging tasks and becomes frustrated. He will pout and refuse to listen to further information or correction. James requires much stability security, nurturing and understanding if he is to overcome his negative self image. James needs a patient, experienced family who can love and provide him with the warmth of a home.

"No themes are so human as those that reflect for us, out of the confusion of life, the close connection of bliss and bale, of the things that help with the things that hurt, so dangling before us forever that bright hard medal, of so strange an alloy, one face of which is somebody's right and ease and the other somebody's pain and wrong." - Henry James (1843-1916)

This week, our adoption spotlight is shining on: AdoptionDNA.com.
Are you seeking a reunion with a birth mother or child? Do you think you’ve found your birth mother or child, but you aren’t completely sure? Are you about to adopt a child?
If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions then you may be a candidate for DNA identification testing, which is the only way to conclusively determine biological relationships.

WEDDING ATTIRE
Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, "Why is the bride dressed in white?"
"Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life," her mother tried to explain, keeping it simple.
The child thought about this for a moment, then said, "So, why's the groom wearing black?"

16. SPEAK OUT
After many years of infertility and trying to adopt domestically, my wife and I adopted a wonderful baby boy from Vietnam. Our story was featured in our local newspaper the Scranton Times. It can be found at the following link:
http://www.scrantontimestribune.com/projects/vietnam/.
An update to the story is at: http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=6362194&BRD=2185&PAG=461&dept_id=416046&rfi=6.
We hope it will help other couples that were in our situation. - Mike Cummings
---------------------------------
We are a family that has been to adoption classes and whatever it took to
adopt. It has been six years now with several updates but nothing has
happened. Continuous calls to everyone under the sun and still, nothing has
become of it. We finally went into the internet and contacted exchanges with
hopeful ideas. We finally contacted after a week, our case worker and she
wanted to know why we would do that. We explained to her that people from
different states may be contacting her for information on us, but she told us
that it was unlikely this would happen. This is our third social worker, and
we are eventually going to give up on adoption. It is a shame that this is
happening. We own a large house, a farm, and all the animals a farm can hold, but there are no children to enjoy it!
- RR Remar of Rhode Island

My birth name was Claire Arruda, dob: 10/01/51, Fall River, Massachusetts. My birth mother's name is Alice Arruda. Her brothers are Edward, Antone, Gus/Gustavo/Augustus. I have an older sister named for my birth grandmother, Mary Anna. I can be contacted at
kathleen_ker@yahoo.com.
The only thing I am trying to do now, with a searcher, is to call as many Arrudas as I can in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I'd love to get some medical background. I am 51 and have been on hormone replacement therapy for 10 years. My doctor wants me to stop, but I certainly don't. Does heart disease, heart attack, blood clots, cancer, ... what runs in the family? - Kathleen S.
---------------------------------
I just finished reading several messages where everyone is discussing adoption of
babies from out of country, and adopting youth. Every child needs a good home with
lots of love. I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone would be upset about
someone from our country adopting outside the country. Let's not forget...a child is
a child, and they are ALL children of God. Also, I personally would prefer to adopt
an older child, because I have already gone thru diapers, bottles, and finding
babysitters, so I can go to work and earn a living. I enjoyed every minute of
raising my child, but I don't want to repeat it. Some people have not had the
opportunity to do this, so please don't begrudge them that because they want to
adopt an infant. - Cheryl, OH.

Hello: I am on the search for my friend's birth mom. She was born Joanne Lynn Craig, in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada on December 16th, 1966. She is very much wanting info regarding her medical history as well as heritage. She was adopted out of a Catholic orphanage in or near Long Branch, Ontario. Any ideas on how to access papers from Catholic Orphanages? Any ideas on what my next step should be?
E-mail me at roe1@eastlink.ca. Thanks, and Happy New Year!!! - Roe

Hello,
I am an adoptee who was recently found by my birth mother. It's been a great
experience so far. I am now looking for the brother she gave up before me.
He was born in CO on 5-2-67 and his adoptive name is Thomas Lyle King. I am
also looking for our birth father. His name was Fred Gerber (first name
possibly Charles--Fred was a middle name) and he was originally from MO, but
lived in CO. Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you,
Jennifer M.

I am a birth mother looking for her son. He was born on April 20, 1966 in Rockford, Illinois. There are some medical issues he should know about and I'd like him to know about myself, his father, and his sister. I thought I knew where he was, but after checking found that he was not there. If anyone can help, please e-mail me at S.LUZAMBA@VERIZON.NET. Thanks.

17. ADOPTION ONLINE SUPPORT GROUP REVIEW
Here's a recent post from the Older Child Adoption group:
Teresa,
I agree that a secure home has boundaries. I also know that our pre-training
director spoke of ways that children who have been removed from parental
control manage to behave in ways that would elicit abuse responses from most
people. We, of course, are different. Our kids are different, too.
Remind him that he is the one who controls his temper, but you are the ones
who control his activities BECAUSE YOU LOVE HIM. All rules are set and enforced BECAUSE YOU LOVE HIM.
The sillier the rule, the more deeply you love him. Also, in a family that is polite, caring and loving, each member does their
part because we love each other.
I also like having a punishment/remedial action planned before the heat of
the moment. For our son, who is much younger, the first oppositional
behavior that rankles us causes the loss of video time. More of the same
removes TV time (sometimes he can lose a whole week in one of his
outbursts).
There are time outs in the corner.
Feel free to extrapolate his special privileges and go from there. Obviously
a bit of extra chores might also be in the offing. We also allow our son to
earn back losses, but it takes a day of extra help to start earning his
stuff again.
I hope this helps. Moving is tough on everyone, and your son may also just
trying to make you give up now so you won't give up on him later, when it
might mean more to him.

18. ADOPTION POETRY
MOTHER
I am the daughter you could not raise.
Do I ever cross your mind?
Has your memory of me faded with time?
It's been 34 years; did you make the right choice?
Being adopted was not a choice of mine.
A child misses a parent even one she has never known.
Till the day I meet you, there will be that empty spot in my soul.
Mother, I thank you for my life as it was, but I miss my mommy whom without I'll
never be whole.
Love Always,
Your baby duck
