1. ANNOUNCEMENT
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE YOUR STORY ON NATIONAL TELEVISION?
The Hallmark Channel is producing a new series on adoption, following
last year's award-winning adoption series. They have asked Adoption.com
to help them find heart-warming, moving or unique stories for this series.
Will you be traveling to a foreign country in the next few months to
adopt? Do you have a name of an adoption birth family member, but have not
yet been able to find them and would like to be reunited on television?
Will your upcoming adoption have a unique twist (i.e. wins, second
adoption from the same birthmother, special needs, etc.)? Does your
adoption include an ethnicity such as african american, hispanic or native
american? Are you an adoptive parent with a disability (i.e. a deaf
parent adopting a deaf child, etc.)? The Hallmark Channel is looking for
stories that have yet to unfold (i.e. the reunion has not yet happened,
the adoption has not yet happened, etc.). If you have a good adoption
story you would like to share on national television, or if you have
questions, please e-mail editor@adoptionmedia.com.

Are you an ADOPTEE? Are you 18 years or older? Are you interested in participating in a phone interview?

(Approximately 30-40 minutes). Interested? Want to know more? Please call Karen Tam at 1-800-952-7951, mailbox code 94982, and leave your name, phone number, and the best time to return your call, or email Karen Tam at katam@jhsph.edu. Thank you! My 3 Angels - new article by Jacquelie Horan Timins
I had been grieving most of my adult life with many family tragedies, and this story is about my first joy and waking up from a slumber of sadness and beginning a new life filled with joy...almost like being reborn so to speak. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=273
Tough Times Get Better - new article by Beth Sorrentino
I believe that getting pregnant with my son saved my life, because it made me come back to reality and realize that I need to get my life together. I dropped out of high school, and after my daughter went to live with her grandmother, I was drinking heavily for almost 2 years every single night, then I found out was pregnant with my son I stopped. After I had him I went a program Job Corps and got my GED and a trade and was there for 2 years and just graduated last December and am now working full time. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=274
Even at 65 - new article by Sandra Moore
I did not make the first contact with her. I gave her time to absorb all that was happening and finally, after a couple of weeks, I wrote to her telling her that I needed no explanation of any kind about my birth, wanted nothing from her except to meet her and possibly have a relationship with her. Then she wrote, I wrote again, and then she called me. It was wonderful to hear her voice and we almost felt we knew each other by then. http://e-magazine.adoption.com/article.php?articleid=275

6. FEATURED WAITING CHILD
Eddie is a very sweet, affectionate young man. He has the capabilities of being very considerate to adults and wants their approval. He struggles some in school and is in classroom settings that assist him in these struggles. Eddie needs a family with a strong interest in sports and sport related activities. He would do well in a family that exhibits strong family values. Eddie’s family will need to be willing to support his strong feelings and ties he has to his birth family. It would be wonderful if Eddie’s new family would allow him to have visits or contact with his siblings that have been placed separately into adoption.

Probably that's why we decide we're done. It's getting too scary.
We are touching down onto something real.

14. SOUND COUNSEL
Question:
I am a birth mom of three children. My oldest daughter was 15 when she and I
found each other. We were both looking at the same time; I had prayed for
many days for God to help me find her. As it turned out, it was a very bad
reunion as she had been sexually molested by the adopted family (which at
the time I did not know). Three of the adopted brothers and an uncle in the
family had done this to her. I did not find this out until she was 20, and
the problem now is she has so much anger towards me because this happened to
her that she refuses contact with me. She blames me for her being molested.
She is now 25 with 2 sons married;, she also refuses counseling. My younger
daughter that is 23 also with a son talks with her on a regular basis. I
found her last year, the day before Thanksgiving. We are getting along great.
She has no anger at all towards me. She was placed with very wonderful and
loving parents. It's sad but her adopted Mom has passed away (also me and her
look just alike. I am truly blessed)...What can I do at this point, as I
want a relationship with my daughter!? She recently contacted her birth
father. The two of them had blood tests to prove he is her dad. Their
relationship is going very well. He could never have kids with his wife, so
now he has an instant daughter and 2 grandsons. I am also in a search for
my 20-year-old son which will soon be 21 in July. Please advise me on what I
need to do that will be best for my daughter at this time. I love her very
much, but she doesn't believe me. Thank You in advance for your reply.
Answer:
I am not sure I understand all of the details behind this situation. From
the first part of your email, it seems like you two had a relationship from
the time she was 15 to the time she was 20 before you found out about the
molestation. How was the relationship during that five year period? What
caused her to suddenly decide she wanted to blame you for the unfortunate
circumstances she suffered through? In addition, why was she trying to find
you if she blamed you all along? These are loaded, but important questions.
I am sorry that you have to go through all of this. It is not fair for your
daughter to blame you for what happened, as you had no control over the
circumstances. It is also unfortunate that she refuses counseling. More so
than anything, that is certainly the best for her.
I must be honest, you cannot force your daughter to forgive you or accept a
relationship with you. That, unfortunately, is a fact of life. I find it
strange, however, that she blames you, but not her father, for what happened
to her. She must understand that giving a child up for adoption is a joint
decision (in most cases). I assume her father had as much say in the
adoption as you did.
My first suggestion is trying to talk to her father (assuming you still keep
in contact with him). Maybe your daughter has talked about the situation
with him. This may help you answer some important questions. Also, maybe
you can talk to your other daughter about what is going on. She too may be
able to shed some light on the situation.
My only other pro-active suggestion is to write her a letter explaining how
you feel. Other than that, you may just want to leave her be. If you try
and force it too much, you could lose all possibility of resolution.
Just remember, life will always play itself out for the best, whether you
see it that way or not. It's how you chose to use those circumstances in
your life that make all the difference.
Best wishes,
DB
Question:
I am an adoptive parent. How would I go about finding my son's birth
mother? He wants to find her, but is reluctant to take the first steps
which may be expensive. I am willing to cover all his expenses.
M.V.
Answer:
M.
Congratulations; I have deemed you "Parent of the Year"! That is so
wonderful that you want to help your son find his biological mother. You
serve as an example for the support adopted children/young adults/adults
need in their lives.
That being said, you are correct to assume the possibility of expense. It
is possible for this to be an expensive search, then again it may also not
be. It depends on the circumstances behind the adoption, which state the
adoption took place in, etc.
I would start by doing some research on your own (with your son, of course).
Try researching the adoption laws in the state your son was adopted. This
will help you better understand your rights to different forms of
information (i.e., non-identifying medical information, full disclosure,
etc.). Some states have registries for people involved in the adoption
process that allow a person to register their name with the registry. If
the other party has done the same, the registry will contact you. Other
states allow full disclosure upon a simple written request (sometimes with a
fee). Without knowing which state your son was adopted in, I cannot give
anything more specific.
In addition, I suggest looking into the adoption papers (assuming you still
have them in a safety deposit box or something of the like). From personal
experience, I would never have found out my biological mother's name without
doing just that. Once you have a name, if you decide to use a private
investigator or search service, it makes the process easier than having just
a Jane/John Doe.
If you chose to use a search service or private investigator, please make
sure you do your research before hand. Ask for references and actually
interview those references. Make sure they were happy with the results.
Many times, these companies will "guarantee results"; however, they never
specify satisfactory results. It is financially risky to get involved with
investigators. It is easy to be taken advantage of. That's why I suggest
doing as much investigation on your own as possible.
My last piece of advice is to not give up. This realistically will not be
successful in the first day, week, month or even few years. There is always
a possibility that it will never be successful. That's doesn't mean you
shouldn't try, but rather, keep yours and your son's expectations realistic.
Again, I would like to personally thank you for being such a supportive and
understand parent. Your son is very lucky.
Good luck with your search,
DB

15. SPEAK OUT
This is so hard: I am not an adoptee, or a birth mother, but I
am an aunt looking for her neice and nephews. I have looked everywhere
that I can. They were taken from their mother in October 1992 in Wichita,
Kansas. Their names are Crystal Lee Mckown and Sean Paul Mckown. Crystal
is 21 years old, and Sean is 19. If anyone can help me, I would greatly
appreciate it. They have two other brothers as well, but because of their
ages, I cannot even try to look for them. - Sandra Mckown
---------------------------------
I am looking for my birth parents. I was born on 07/20/54 in Beth El
hospital in Brooklyn, New York and was placed for adoption by in March
1955. My birth mother's name was Miriam Rosenberg. If you have
information that can help in my search, please e-mail me at
dgrubman@hahnhessen.com.
---------------------------------
I am 50 years old; I was a foster parent. I adopted 2 boys (not related). I
was then informed one of my sons had a sibling; he was in another foster
home. I got in touch with CPS and ended up adopting the brother. I was
later informed a sister was born to my boys; she was in another foster home.
I tried to get her. The other foster parents got a lawyer after 10 months,
the judge felt it best she stay where she was. She didn't know us.
Meanwhile, the mother had another child; we went to court and the judge
placed her with me with and her brothers. She is 9 months old; her
brothers are 2 and 4. My other son is 7. To see these children together is
a joy. Although I fought hard to keep them together, I was also afraid, a
person my age taking on so many children, butIi have never regretted what
I have done, and everyday I see them interact and enjoy each other, I am
glad the judge placed them together with me. - Pam Gilbert
---------------------------------
My daughter's birthday is May 29, 1985. She was born at St. Paul Catholic
Hospital in Dallas, TX. Issues that arose through the adoption process
prevented the adoption for the birth parents for six months (I am not sure
if they knew this, but it may be helpful). I believe she was named
Brianna during that time, and I did visit my daughter during this time.
Her adoptive parents sent me pictures for a while. She is a beautiful
brown-eyed, brown-haired girl. For 18 years, I have dreamed of the day
that we would meet again. After she was born, I enjoyed 'rooming in' with
her to savor every moment with her even though it was not advised by the
adoption personnel. I and my family loved her and held her close. We
prayed that this would not be the last time we were ever to have her with
us; she is always present in our memories. If you are my daughter, or if
you know how I can contact her, please contact me at
suz_booth@sbcglobal.net. I will continue other avenues to find you, and please know that I Love You and Always Have.
---------------------------------
I am 73, was adopted in 1930 in Grand Rapids, MI. Found my birthmother
in 1974 & lived with her from 1976 till her death in 1987. I have tried
to locate my father & am batting zero. Any help or suggestions beside
the usual things. I know his name & occupation, that's it. He was a
professional musician; they traveled a lot in those days. Have tried
several musicians unions -- nothing, but it didn't surprise me as my
mother didn't know where he was from. Chances are he's dead by now, or in
his 90's. Help is what I need. Thanks, Dorothy Kovarik

16. ADOPTION ONLINE SUPPORT GROUP REVIEW
Here's a recent post from the Adoptee Support group:
Hi Jill,
Thanks for your reply. I have a confidential intermediary at WARM who is conducting
a search, I am however looking for a person I met in Kennewick named Cheryl Staley.
She is searching for her cousin who was adopted through the same Dr. Richard Morton.
She and I corresponded several times a few years ago and I've lost track of her.
She no longer has the same e-mail, and I was unable to get her phone number through
information. I wanted to contact her and find out the name of the attorney who
arranged her cousin's adoption because I believe it may be the same attorney who
arranged mine. My original birth certificate has very little information on it. It
only has the b-mom name and the state she is originally from. No birthday or father
info. If you think you might be able to help me find Cheryl Staley (her married
name) it would be greatly appreciated. I know you're not in Kennewick, but maybe one
of your relatives knows her? Let me know what you think... Many thanks!

LIFE GIVERS
You did not give me the gift of life,
but in my heart I know
the love I feel is so deep and real
as if it had been so.
You did not give me the gift of life,
but rather the chance to live...
to love; to learn; to laugh;
to cry; but most importantly, to give.
You did not give me the gift of life,
and that's ok with me.
For no matter what, you're my parents
for all eternity!
For us to have each other
is like a dream come true.
No, you did not give me the gift of life;
Life gave me the gift of you!
Dedicated to my wonderful adoptive parents who are my
best friends in the world!
